What Is Daylighting?
Most homeowners, when looking at purchasing a new home, are typically drawn to homes with large windows and plenty of natural sunlight. Natural sunlight provides major benefits for a home, including an increase in mood elevation, general well-being and use of less electricity during daylight hours. Daylighting, by definition, is the practice of utilizing windows and reflective surfaces to increase natural light within a building.
Due to the effectiveness and benefits of daylighting, homeowners and home builders alike have sought ways to increase natural light within the dwelling. Common methods have expanded from simply installing more windows to installing skylights. Unfortunately, both of these methods can actually harm the energy efficiency of a home since neither windows nor skylights are extremely successful at keeping heat or cold from entering the home with the natural light. Therefore, another method used to increase daylighting within the home has come in the form of light tunnels. They are able to increase natural light within the home without bringing in the heat or cold from outside.
